Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Line Pattern Rubbings

Art Elements: line, texture, pattern
Art Techniques: collage; rubbing
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: line segments, patterning

Students cut lines from black construction paper squares and glue them onto white squares to make a design. They then use the design to make repeated rubbings on a strip of white construction paper, then repeat that pattern on another strip. All the parts are taped or glued together. These could be made even longer, or done with 'assigned' patterns (i.e., AAB, ABC) or students could be asked to name the patterns they create in several different ways. To extend the activity even further, students can be asked to find the 'worth' of their line designs using different values for the lines (1, 2, 5, 10).
