Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Positive-Negative Symmetrical Designs

Art Elements: shape, space
Art Techniques: collage
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: symmetry

Materials: construction paper, 9x12 and 6x9 in two contrasting colors; scissors; glue
Procedure: For this activity I use one 6x9 paper and one 9x12 paper in two contrasting colors. Shapes are carefully cut from the 6x9 paper, then glued onto one-half of the 9x12 paper. The cut-out shape pieces are glued on the opposite side to make a positive-negative, symmetrical design.
This can also be done as a four part design by cutting two papers at the same time, or instead of working on a rectangle, the background can be any shape.
