Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Warm and Cool "Matisse" Collages

 Art Elements: shape, color, space
Art Techniques: collage
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: shape, even-odd

Students choose warm or cool background color, then cut an odd number of various-sized rectangles in the same palette of colors as the background color (i.e., warm colors on warm background, cool colors on cool background). They arrange and glue the rectangles onto the background, overlapping some. Then they cut and glue on an even number of fanciful shapes, squiggles, and swirls in colors of the opposite palette (i.e., cool shapes on warm backgrounds, warm shapes on cool backgrounds).
