Peripheral Lessons from Literature

Writers are awesome.

My favorite stories are those that remind me of something in my life, that help give me insight into some challenge or event that has given me another layer of experience. These lessons are subtle and obvious at the same time ~~ important events of a story with turning into lectures.

My favorite books have given me some very important messages:

Angle of Repose
Wallace Stegner

Expectations, held too tightly, can get in the way of your living. Be flexible ~~ be grateful for the gifts in front of you, and live for this time rather than some time in the future. Recognize love.

Love in the Time of Cholera
Gabriel Garcia-Marquez

Love can last a lifetime, in or out of a relationship. It doesn't judge or resent, doesn't whine or lament ~~ instead, it continues to give with patience and commitment.

Charlotte's Web
E. B. White

A true friend could come from out of nowhere, seemingly by accident, and can grow into a gift that expands your heart and your life. It teaches you about commitment and sharing, about the continuance of life, and about the connection of all things.

The House of the Spirits
Isabel Allende

Families are magical, mysterious, dynamic, humorous ~~ each person contributing a piece of the overall structure. Love creates power.

Writing Down the Bones
Natalie Goldberg

Writing isn't mysterious. What you write may be lousy or great, but to be a writer you have to write, give yourself permission to write garbage, and dare to write about eggplant.

Radical Reflections
Mem Fox

Children learn to read by reading, and to write by writing. A teacher who reads and writes knows the process, doesn't need a script. The writing process has no rules; sometimes you do one draft, other times you do thirty-seven. Who says every child needs to do three drafts every time?

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Robert Pirsig

Life is a journey! ~~ Pay attention! ~~ Smell the rain! ~~ Fix the dripping faucets!
